[00:00:00] Speaker A: Welcome to the Whole Hog Sports Daily Podcast. I'm Christina Long. It is Thursday, October 22, and in a couple of days, Arkansas men's basketball is going to take the floor at Budwalton arena for the first time. Unofficially, it's an exhibition against Gonzaga, but still exciting nonetheless to get to see John Calipari's team take the floor. We're joined today by Anthony Christensen, who is on the road for a little bit of fun travel that I might ask him about. You got to go see St. Louis win the U.S. open cup, which I don't know anything about because I am just now breaking into Premier League and I don't know a lot about MLS or American soccer. So I'm excited for you that your hometown team got to win and that you got to be there.
[00:01:18] Speaker B: Oh, yes. No, easily the best sporting memory of my life. I mean, they played terribly, first and foremost.
[00:01:25] Speaker A: I mean, you say that about every team you like.
[00:01:27] Speaker B: They did not, they did not play well, got dominated, especially in the first half.
But I mean, they won in penalties.
I mean, it was just, I mean, for the people who don't know, the US Open cup is, is the American equivalent of the FA cup, if people
[00:01:43] Speaker A: don't know the US Open cup, they probably also don't know the FA Cup.
[00:01:46] Speaker B: That's true. Yeah. I mean, it's, it's the third oldest soccer tournament in the world, I guess is the, the best way to put it behind the FA cup and the Scottish FA Cup. So very big deal when they, I, I had been telling myself for a long time if they made the final, I was going to find some way somehow to make it work. And then my brother and I got To. Got to come here to Columbus, and. And I did a lot of work on the road, and, you know, we got to see. Got to see the hometown team win its first trophy, so.
[00:02:17] Speaker A: And you ran into a former Razorback aver Lee. Did you just, like, happen to see her?
Yes.
[00:02:23] Speaker B: Yeah. No, she. She said hello to me, and I was like, oh, hey, look, it's It. It's you.
Which, you know, she's.
She's in a relationship with Columbus goalkeeper Patrick Schultz, also. Also a. A St. Louis guy.
So that was a fun little interaction.
Good to see her. She's doing well.
Also ran into my college soccer coach, which was a ton of fun.
[00:02:49] Speaker A: Very cool.
[00:02:49] Speaker B: I. I mean, just overall. I mean, just an incredible experience. I actually. I also ran into my. My brother's indoor soccer referee. I mean, it was just.
It a who's who kind of night.
[00:03:06] Speaker A: So funny.
[00:03:06] Speaker B: I mean, you can probably hear my voice is a little hoarse. I was screaming the whole night, and I mean, you know, tears in my eyes, like, genuinely. I. I know it's funny, but, like, genuine tears in my eyes when. When Daniel Edelman scored the winning penalty.
It was. It was an incredible, incredible night.
[00:03:24] Speaker A: Well, I had to give you your soccer corner, but we are here to talk about basketball, and I also want to shout you out for. We're very excited that our Hogs Illustrated basketball preview magazine is out now. There's details on all of our social media, and you can order
[email protected] online.com Anthony did a really great story with Jordan Smith. We got to do an awesome photo shoot with him. It was really fun. I don't know how. If you're watching on us. Us on our YouTube channel at whole Hog Sports, you can see the COVID that I'm showing here. You may not be able to tell, but he's holding a Lego. Anthony, I have not actually asked you this. How did the fact that Jordan Smith Jr. Loves Legos, how did that come up? How did you learn that?
[00:04:02] Speaker B: I just basically asked him, just, so what's something, you know, maybe people don't know about you that maybe you're passionate about or something you enjoy doing just away from basketball? He first he mentioned, you know, he loves working with, you know, underprivileged youth and. And, you know, guys with, like, disabled children and stuff like that? And then he was like, and I also love Legos.
[00:04:25] Speaker A: Community service and Legos. Just the pillars of a young man's life.
[00:04:29] Speaker B: Exactly. So as soon as he said that, I was like, well, I know I'm gonna lead my story with.
And then we started talking about Legos. I haven't played with Legos since I was. I was a kid. I would love to get back into it because they're awesome.
But no, it was a ton of fun. Jordan was great to work with. I mean, everybody I got to talk to for that story was. Was a ton of. Was. Was a ton of fun to work with. Like, and, and just for me personally, I got to talk to John Wall. I remember being a kid being like, God, this guy a. This guy's awesome. And then just to, like, meet him and, and, and talk to him for. For a story like this was. Was super cool.
But no, I mean, everybody I talked to was great. I, I really enjoyed working on the story. It's a. It's a rare one I'm actually happy with.
So, yeah, that's. That.
[00:05:14] Speaker A: It came out really good. And this magazine, we. We did the first. Our first Kind of Basketball exclusive preview last year, and we have men's and women's stories. We've got the feature on Jordan Smith. Anthony wrote a story about Cal Perry, you know, going in with a young team, and kind of how they've approached that process.
There's quotes from the coaches about all the. The key players on both of these teams. We do that for our football and our baseball previews, too. It's really cool. And then both of you, Ethan Westerman and Anthony wrote about some of the top games to watch this year and gave you an early, early preview of games all up and down the schedule and kind of the. The narrative surrounding them and why they're going to be exciting and interesting games to watch. So we're really pleased with how this turned out. There's a lot of really cool photos that they were able to get with with Jordan. But I want to talk to you about Jordan Anthony. Not Jordan Anthony, different guy.
Talk to you about Jordan Smith because I think. And tell me if I'm off track with this, but I think, you know, this is another exciting freshman guard, another exciting Caliperi guard. But I think when you look at Jordan Smith vs Darius Acuff and you touch on this in the story, he is not trying to be the next Darius Acuff. They're very different players. And I think what's been interesting is that Darius Acuff, I feel like when he came in, it was the question mark around him was, can he play a lot of defense? How good can he be on the defensive end? Whereas Jordan Smith, I feel like that kind of starts with defense. But people kind of lead with his defensive ability when they talk about him. Is that a correct assessment? And then what else is there? You know, we know Jordan Smith is a star. We know he's so good, but what is it about him?
[00:06:51] Speaker B: Yeah, I mean, first and foremost you're, you're correct in saying that everything or not everything, but the first thing you notice about Jordan Smith is his defense. I mean, he's a really tough on ball defender. He can guard the perimeter, he gets, he stays in front of his guys. I think the quote he had the other day when we had the, the, the scrums was like, I just like to see the other team's point guard or something like that or, or go through it or whatever he said. But yeah, I mean, he's just defensively like his motor is, it just doesn't stop. And then he's got all the physical tools for to be a really great lead defender as well. You know, he's not the tallest guy. I think he's listed at like 6:2, but he's got like a 66 wingspan or something like that. So he's hard to get around. You know, he's got active hands. You know, he's, his footwork is really good and all, all, all of that you want on the defensive end.
And you know, the thing that you kind of look at with him is, you know, they, his offensive game maybe needs some, a little bit of work, but I think you can see obviously, you know, he's a capable offensive player. You know, you're not the number two overall, you know, recruit in the class if you're, you know, if, if you're playing like me on offense. Right? So, you know, he's, he's got that kind of capability. His shot is a working, feels harsh to say work in progress because of who he is, but you know, they're, you know, he's working a lot on his shot and making sure that it's as good as it can be. You know, I think his distribution is good. You know, we saw some of this in the Bahamas against obviously, you know, teams that they're not gonna, they're not going to play against a lot of teams of that kind of quality in the regular season. No disrespect to those teams, but I think you saw A, the defensive motor and B, the, the, the potential he has on the offensive end. You know, he's, you know, a remarkable athlete. You know, he can, he can put back dunks, which is not something you're typically going to see A ton of. From a point guard or. Or a lead guard. And, you know, he's kind of. He's. He's probably going to be the guy with the ball in his hands in the crucial moments with this team, so he's going to be a lot of fun to watch.
And. Yeah, so the, the build. The main thing that you see with him is the defense, but I think the offense is really coming along, and, you know, I'm excited to see just how much that progresses as the. As the season goes on.
[00:09:11] Speaker A: Set the table for us on this, this Gonzaga exhibition. You know, Arkansas comes in ranked number 12. Gonzaga came in at number 15 in the preseason poll. You had Arkansas at 11 and Gonzaga at 12, which I thought was interesting. You had them actually even closer.
What do we need to know about Gonzaga this year? We were talking before we started recording. Don't forget, they're in the Pac 12 now that the Pac 12 is back and that Gonzaga is in.
[00:09:30] Speaker B: It's alive and Gonzaga is its heartbeat.
No, So, I mean, when you look at this Gonzaga roster, it doesn't have maybe the same names that would stick out, you know, in the. In the past, like. Like they had. Like they had had in the past. You know, there's not a. A Drew Timmy, who, you know, has been at Gonzaga seemingly forever. I know he was just a true senior, you know, when he finished, but, you know, it felt like he had been there for, like, nine years for, for some reason. But, I mean, Braden Huff is back. You know, he dealt with some injury issues last season. He's a really good player who, you know, if he was fully healthy or if he was healthy, you know, I think Gonzaga probably run in the NCAA tournament. And then I like some of the additions that they made in the portal. You know, Xavian Lee is a guy who, you know, Arkansas fans are probably going to be familiar with because he was at Florida last season. Didn't really have a banner year for Florida last year. I kind of feel like some of that was the fit and, you know, it just kind of felt a little bit off at times. But, you know, he. He.
He was who he was at Princeton. Right. And I know it's a different level, you know, from the Ivy to the sec, but you could see that he's a very capable player and a guy who, who, you know, like. Like I said, very capable player. And I'm excited to see how he does, you know, in a Gonzaga team that I think he's going to fit in really well with. And then I think one of the most underrated additions in the portal this off season was Isaiah Harwell, a guy who didn't get to play a ton at Houston last year. But you look at, I mean, yeah, Kingston Flemings was ahead of him, right? I mean, Kingston Flemings was incredible. But, yeah, you look at. You look at him. I like the. The physical tools. I think he's got, you know, a lot of. He's got really good positional size at the guard spots. And, you know, I'm really excited to see. To see what he can do. And you, you know, D. Davis Fogle and then you guys. Guys like that. And then, you know, they obviously added a really nice front court piece in Massafa Diop, who, you know, Arkansas was reportedly in on as well. So he's, you know, coming over from Arizona State, and Arizona State didn't really have, I mean, didn't have a good season last year, but, you know, he was a really nice piece for them. So I'm excited to see kind of all of those. Those pieces kind of come together and kind of play for the first time together.
At least from what I've seen. I haven't gotten to see, you know, any Gonzaga practices, and I don't think
[00:11:43] Speaker A: you haven't flown out there and seen any of their practices. What are you doing?
[00:11:46] Speaker B: I would love to go to the kennel.
[00:11:49] Speaker A: Is that what it's called? I didn't know that.
[00:11:51] Speaker B: I don't know if it's like the official name of the. The arena, but they call it.
[00:11:54] Speaker A: People call it that. That's pretty cool.
[00:11:56] Speaker B: I. I love it.
But, yeah, no, so I, I'm excited to see this Gonzaga team. You know, they were kind of in limbo for a while because Mario San Supuri, you know, left kind of late in the off season to sign with Valencia in Spain and go home, which is, I'm sure, really cool for him, but not ideal for Gonzaga at the time. But, you know, I think they. They responded well, especially when, you know, a lot of these fifth year guys were getting that eligibility and getting Xavian Lee, I think, is a huge deal for them, you know, with that departure. So I'm excited to see Gonzaga. Mark Few is, you know, a Hall of Famer and, you know, a very close friend of John Calipari's.
So, you know, he's a very great. He's a great coach, and I'm excited to see, you know, what. What this game kind of looks like
[00:12:40] Speaker A: for the Arkansas side of things. I think, you know, you went to the Bahamas, you've gotten to see this team quite a bit more than the average person. But is there anything kind of coming out of that trip and those exhibitions, any kind of remaining questions or, or things that you're going to be really keying in on to watch when Arkansas plays a team that's a little bit more its own size?
[00:12:58] Speaker B: Yeah, I think dealing with capable front courts, I think is the first thing that, that comes to mind. Like I mentioned, you know, Mustafa Giop is, you know, he's a really. He's a very impactful player in, in the paint and everything like that. So I'm excited to see how guys like Cooper Bowser, Caleb Ryu, you know, and, and the rest of, you know, the, the front court that they brought in kind of deal with him and the rest of the Gonzaga front court. I think that's the biggest thing that I'm looking forward to seeing just defensively, how they handle, you know, playing against, you know, a guy of. Of that size, that caliber, that physicality. Because they haven't seen that yet. I mean, they haven't seen that outside of their own gym yet, I guess I should say so. I'm excited to see that. I'm excited to see how the offense looks against defenses that can stay in front of them. And I. One of the things that I really liked about what they did in the Bahamas was, you know, even though they could have. They didn't let just their athleticism and just overall skill advantage kind of come into play in that. They actually still, you know, ran some sets. They. They didn't. They didn't just, you know, run to the rim every time or they weren't just chucking threes up all the time. They were actually trying to play. And I think that was really important and really good to see that they were, they were taking that opportunity not just to, you know, go blow past Tauros devaye. They were doing it to, you know, to kind of get used to playing with each other, I guess, against outside competition. So I'm excited to see how that looks, you know, against a comparable opponent. And yeah, I think, I think those are probably the two biggest things I'm looking forward to is the, the defensive side on the front court and I guess the offensive side of the front court as well, but also to see how the offense looks against the defense that can, that can keep pace with them.
[00:14:44] Speaker A: This is a team that obviously is led by Jordan Smith. As far as star power goes, you know, he's going to be their, their top draft pick, most likely. He's projected you go as high as number one if all goes the way he wants it to. But I think even when you kind of look at the rest of the makeup of this team, it's a lot of guys who kind of drew some headlines or a lot of guys that people were really excited to see Arkansas get.
Who other than Jordan Smith, is there somebody that you think is maybe flying under the radar or is going to be a bigger piece of this team than. Than people think or. Or something like that?
[00:15:13] Speaker B: Yeah, I think if you ask me this question, you know, a couple months ago I would have said J.J. andrews, but I think he's starting to. I think he's starting to get those kind of recognitions and, and, and I think he. He's deserved that. I mean, when you look at his big question mark coming out of high school was his shot. And you can tell that, you know, he's worked on that a ton. The staff has worked with him on that a ton. Just the mechanics of it look a lot better than they did in high school. And at least from what we've seen in the Bahamas, which, you know, again, take it with. With a grain of salt because of the. The quality of competition. You know, it looked good and it was, it was. He was hitting shots at a high clip. So he would be my answer a couple months ago, maybe. But I. Like I said, I think he's starting to get the recognition that he's. That he's earned there. I think the other guy who, you know, maybe he's flown under the radar maybe feels a little bit wrong, but I think abdu t is not getting talked about a ton. You know, he's. He's a guy with good positional size, you know, great athleticism. And, you know, I think you saw in the Bahamas what he's capable of on both sides of the ball. You know, I don't remember the exact stat line he had against the Bahamas, but I think he almost had a double. Double, you know, had a bunch of blocks, some steals. And just overall, just in that game at least was the most impressive player for me.
I think he.
As far as. And like I said, I feel like flying under the radar maybe is.
[00:16:39] Speaker A: Is too strong. Yeah.
[00:16:41] Speaker B: With him. But, you know, I think he's a guy who, you know, hasn't been getting talked about, you know, as, you know, like as much as like a Jordan Smith or, you know, JJ in recent weeks.
I think he's probably the one I would answer that with.
I'm trying to think if there's anybody else who.
And I don't have the roster in front of me, so I apologize. But I'm trying to think.
[00:17:06] Speaker A: Well, I wanted to ask you about. I mean, another guy. I don't know if he fits that bill. He probably doesn't. But you wrote about Mika Mirnan the other day. Is it. Or Morin. And they posted something that made me think it's more an.
[00:17:16] Speaker B: I've always said Miran.
[00:17:18] Speaker A: Okay, we'll. We'll learn. We need to make sure we ask him about that.
With, with Mika, you know, he was. There was kind of that time where he was in limbo. It was. He wasn't ineligible, but it was possible that he would be because of his European pro contract.
His eligibility is confirmed. He's going to be fine.
You got to talk to him the other day when they had a little bit of a media day.
What, you know, you wrote about how it was such a relief for him personally and for this team to. To get him, you know, fully eligible.
What is his role with this team? What are, what are we going to see from him now that he's actually. Because he didn't get to play in the Bahamas, right?
[00:17:53] Speaker B: Yes. Yeah. No.
[00:17:54] Speaker A: Okay. For a second, I was like, wait, did he play.
[00:17:56] Speaker B: Oh, no, no, no play in the Bahamas for him. But yeah, I think. I think the thing that you're going to see with him, I would expect him to line up at the 4, so he's not going to be, you know, in the paint. But he offers really, really great positional size at the four spot.
And that's something that I think people are going to notice with this Arkansas team. I think they have a lot more size and versatility in the front court than they did a year ago or even two years ago as well.
But with him in particular, I think that he's a guy who, you know, he can stretch the floor, he can play. You know, he can shoot from the outside. You know, he can crash the basket as well. The thing that everybody talks about with him is, you know, he's got just these incredible highlights from Eurobasket and, you know, his time in the prep ranks as well.
Defensively, he's a guy who can. He can protect the rim. You know, he's not the most physical guy on earth, so that's something that they're going to want to work with him on, and I'm sure they have been working with him on.
So that's. That's just kind of the. The lowdown on. On him. One of the big Critiques with him coming out of, of the Euro league and you know, his time in Serbia was just maybe sometimes the IQ stuff wasn't necessarily there or maybe he just maybe didn't fit in with what, with, with what Partisan was trying to do at the time. And it was a chaotic time, right? I mean, there was a coaching change, coach resigned, you know, coach renowned for working with young players kind of resigned mid season and you know, it was just kind of a chaotic time. Partisan wasn't playing well.
So. And for a guy who's, you know, 18 years old at the time and you know, living in Serbia where he doesn't speak the language, I'm sure it was not the easiest thing to go through. Right. So there was that kind of aspect of things. So I'm intrigued to see how, you know, he kind of fits into the system, how they kind of utilize him.
Where, you know, his, his off ball work I think is going to be an interesting thing to watch for as well because, I mean, when he gets the ball in his hands, I mean, everybody has seen what he can do. You know, he's a guy who can put the ball on the floor and, you know, dunk on somebody's head or he can, you know, shoot from the outside and all of that stuff. He's, he's, you know, a really great athlete. And we saw that, you know, in Euro basket when, you know, he in Finland, you know, made a, you know, a really impressive run and finished, I believe it was, fourth place in that tournament, which was, if I'm not mistaken, the best Finland has ever finished in Euro basket. So it, it, he's got all of the tools and I'm excited to see, you know, how they utilize him. And I'm. The thing I'm gonna be most looking forward to seeing with Mika Marin and is his off ball work. You know, how does he, how does, how does he move off the ball? How does he, you know. Yeah, just all, all, all that off ball stuff with him I think is what I'm most excited to see with him tonight or not tonight. Saturday.
[00:20:39] Speaker A: Saturday, almost.
[00:20:40] Speaker B: Yeah, we're getting close.
[00:20:42] Speaker A: One thing, one thing I really liked that came out of this magazine that we did was you went and talked to Seth Greenberg at media days and did a little kind of Q and A with him about this year's team and he had watched them over the summer. You know, he's obviously close with John Cal Perry, so he had a lot of. He has a good perspective, I think in particular on this team. Even more so than just the average analyst. And I really liked what he said about Billy Richmond because I think Billy Richmond, as one of the few kind of returning guys on this team, he's a known quantity to us.
But I think what I really liked that he said was it's really interesting the way that fans have embraced Billy. He said that a lot of times the guys that kind of are the kind of do the dirty work or whatever, the way that Billy sometimes does is what endeared Billy to fans. And a lot of times those, those things don't get you noticed or, or don't get you celebrated the way it does some of your, your teammates. And what's so unique about Billy is the way that Arkansas fans in particular have just loved the way that he plays and the way that he plays with so much effort and that he is kind of the do it all sort of guy. And he kind of made the point that it's so important to have that and to have a guy who is celebrated for that because it shows other guys, particularly this team that's so young, that you don't always have to be doing the flashy stuff in order to get recognized like being like the, the effort plays like those get noticed too, and those get celebrated too. So I thought that was a really cool point. You know, he said a lot of interesting stuff about this team. But I think I want to ask you just with Billy in particular, he is a known quantity. We know what he brings, but is there anything in particular that you want to see from Billy this year or that you think this team needs to get out of Billy this year?
[00:22:17] Speaker B: Yeah, I think the thing that you, you immediately point to with Billy, it's, it, it's, you know, what maybe docked him in NBA lists and all that is, is the outside shot. You know, I think he shot what was 24, 25 from the three point line last season. And that's just something that, you know, in speaking with him about that, that's something that he's been working on, something he wants to improve on and something that scouts want to see him improve on as well.
But I think as you mentioned, you know, he, he does everything else at just a really elite level. You know, as we've said with a lot of guys on this team, you know, he's an elite athlete. He's a guy who can put the ball on the floor. He's a guy who can handle the ball. You know, he's, he's played some impromptu point guard in the past and they've kind of utilized him as a point guard in practice this offseason as well.
So, you know, he's, he's versatile. He can do a lot of different things. And, you know, he's, he's an exciting to player. He's an exciting player to watch. You know, he's a guy who, you know, if he's in the open floor, he's gonna, he's gonna, he's gonna dunk, right? And people obvious, you know, he's not with the effort plays obviously, you know, he's going a million miles an hour on every play, and people are obviously going to endear, you know, love that kind of stuff.
And those are the gu. Those are the guys you. You need to have.
You need to have in order to have a successful team. Right? I mean, you know, the Cavaliers all those years ago probably don't win a title without Matthew Deova.
And, you know, he's. That's not to say Billy Richmond and Delvedova are the same guys by any means, but because they've got different qualities and all that. But, you know, the effort, place and everything like that could just kind of come with. With that. And I think that's kind of why you've seen him kind of become, you know, a fan favorite every time he's announced. You can't even hear the PA guy finish his name because it's, it's that loud.
But yeah, I think that's the, that's the big thing that I kind of wanted to see with Billy Richmond is, is the outside shot. You know, how much can it continue to improve? Because, you know, yes, the 24, 25, whatever it was last season. Percent, you know, doesn't. Doesn't look good on paper. Right. It just doesn't. But it's.
His shot has already improved so much from where it was when he was in high school to where he is now that, I mean, scouts, coaches, etc, they're, they've obviously noticed that. And when you talk to, to NBA people about Billy Richmond, I mean, their faces light up. They love, they love talking about Billy Richmond. And, you know, we're talking about a guy who would have gotten drafted if he had stayed in, but, you know, decided to go back to school because he would, he would have been taken in the second round. You know, there were some, some whispers about maybe a team taking a flyer on him late in the first, but that would have been very surprising.
So going back to school, improving his draft stock, improving, you know, in areas that, you know, scouts want him to improve in I think was, was the right call, you know, especially when you look at, you know, I'm sure he's probably making more than he would have if he was getting a second round contract.
So when you take all of those factors into play, I think it was the right decision for him to come back to school.
